I used to look at my breasts in the mirror, pulling one up and comparing it to the other. I would wish so hard to have perky, stand-up-here breasts instead of pendulous, way down-there-puppies with sparkling, multicolored stretch marks.

 
Weight changes and overnutrition in my youth never gave me the opportunity to have perky, perfect breasts. Instead, I went from flat to fat and then stretched out to swinging and saggy.

Breasts define our femininity in many ways, we feel sexy because of them and un-sexy in spite of them.

I recall getting intimate with my husband and being so ashamed to get naked in front of him. I apologetically told him I needed to be honest with him and tell him that my breasts sagged, instead of being heralds of fertility and proud of them with pomp and circumstance. I felt deflated because of them just like they were deflated.

Turns out he didn’t care. He actually knew, and had been staring down my top for a while and loved what he was seeing – without me knowing!

Why are breasts such a big deal?

Breasts are bold, they stick out from our bodies. They are the first thing that enters the room, the first thing in many cases that get noticed.

Men obsess about them, maybe because they have mother and latching issues, or maybe because they just adore the difference between male and female bodies.

Whether you think your breasts are too large or too small, they are a source of shame for many. It’s time to take this inappropriate thought pattern and shove it where the sun don’t shine.

It’s our time to be proud of all of our shapes and sizes and stretch marks. Be proud of the pleasure they bring us, from foreplay to feeding our babies.

Breast judgments

My first encounter with the dangers of judgments made on breasts wasn’t my own, but actually my mother’s. When she was a dashing young lady, she had gone to the doctor’s office to have her yearly check-up and breast exam.

Upon taking off her shirt to be examined, the doctor gasped at how large her breasts were (super inappropriate FYI, in this day and age but this was back in the 60s). My mother, being incredibly shy about her sexuality, was immediately embarrassed, turned red as a lobster and searched to get dressed immediately.

 So shocked was she by this judgment that she never had another breast exam again, until it was too late.

Judgments can damage our psyche, we don’t know how our words will fall on the ears receiving them. Judgments serve no purpose either, except pain. After all, no one asks the doctor to comment on how large they are, but rather how healthy they are.

My mother’s breast cancer

Forty years later, my mother waited until blood came out of her nipple and a mass so large it was hard to avoid, came cauli-flowering out of her breast. With two doctors as daughters, we couldn’t believe that she had let the shame of an event that happened so long ago, impact her life now.

 

The diagnosis – stage 4 breast cancer. Devastating, with little to no time to act.

Because of this experience, I got over my breast bullsh*t and got into owning one of the most beautiful, female, flourishing features of my health.

Importance of breast exams

For this reason alone, every single woman in my naturopathic practice would get a yearly breast exam, done by our skilled naturopath assessment hands.

But some of us don’t have access to a doctor who is experienced or willing to do a breast exam, especially since now the recommendation is to avoid breast exams.

 

In countries where breast cancer is diagnosed at advanced stages, it is valuable to have patients understand breast self-examination as well as to be examined1.

So this is extremely valuable. My mother was fortunate, even though she was at the extreme case, she survived with a combination of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy as well as naturopathic medicine. Her cancer was so far advanced that it was an impossibility to only do the natural route.

Self-examination is invaluable

The comment  I used to get in my clinical practice time again is that most women don’t know what normal feels like. They feel that their breasts are lumpy and bumpy (a sign of estrogen dominance, or low iodine).

But let me tell you, the first time I did a breast exam I thought exactly the same thing! How was I going to identify anything going wrong if I can’t notice anything different?

Do you know what changed it? Practice, my friends, practice is the mother of all skills.

And what if you find lots of lumps and bumps? Make your way to your doctor and get checked out. It never hurts to be extra cautious.

What Circadian Rhythm, Castor Oil and Walnuts Have in Common for Breast Wellness

You’ll hear phrases like this from women who’ve made significant lifestyle changes following breast cancer. Can you relate?

Or maybe right now, you or the people you serve are wondering, “how can I keep my breasts healthy?”

You see, it’s fairly common for a health scare to shock people into re-examining their lives and what matters most to them. Breast cancer is no exception, and it’s understandable. 

Breast health can help you look at your life differently. In fact, on an energetic level, breast issues can correspond to an imbalance of nurturing energy, usually focused on the self. So if you’re reading this now, or if you have breast concerns or discomfort, you could look at this as a time for reflection on how you can take better care of you – and especially the wellness of your breasts.

The old adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is highly relevant for breast troubles. Perhaps you’ve also heard the phrase, “a pill for an ill”. Can you relate?

Most breast cancers are linked to lifestyle factors by Queen of the Thrones

Before giving away the reason behind this statement, let’s first look at a surprising statistic.

About 30 to 40% of breast cancers are linked to lifestyle factors.1

Yes. That’s true. While many believe breast disorders/conditions are genetic, hereditary connections are only responsible for less than 10% of the cases.2

However, there are lifestyle changes you can make right now to support your breast health.

Of course, it might be difficult to talk about your breasts and any changes you’ve observed. The breast is loaded with cultural meaning and importance, so yeah – talking about your girls is a little different from discussing changes in say – your feet. . . though feet are important too.

You may even avoid examinations like mammograms or thermograms because you’re worried about discovering something abnormal.

But, visiting your healthcare professional is the best way to understanding your unique body and the best steps to take.

So, with this in mind, let’s look at a few things that can influence your breast health.

The link between inflammation and breast health

You may have noticed soreness or pain in the breasts, especially around your menstrual cycle. You aren’t alone. These symptoms affect two-thirds of women, especially during the childbearing age.3 Are you wondering why this happens? Well, the answer lies in the breast structure.

You see, breasts comprise four main tissue structures:

  • Fat tissue
  • Milk ducts
  • Glands
  • Connective tissue

The fat tissue is influenced by fluctuations in fluid volume. So, this can cause your breasts to swell, resulting in soreness or tenderness, especially right before your cycle when estrogen levels increase. 

“What causes increased fluid?” 

A common cause for increased fluid volume is inflammation. Inflammation is kind of like a fire, and what do you use to put out a fire? Water.

Inflammation is part of your body’s process of fighting against things that harm it (like infections) in an attempt to restore balance.

So, when something damages your cells, your body releases chemicals that trigger an inflammatory response from your immune system. It’s a natural process, but in today’s modern world, inflammation is often out of control.

Did you know that lymphatic blockage can also cause inflammation?4

Lymph vessels are hollow tubes in your lymphatic system that allow lymph fluid to drain out of your breasts. But, if your lymph vessels are blocked, your breasts can become red, swollen, and inflamed. Makes sense, agreed?

Imagine having a hectic week, with only four hours of sleep every night for 7 days in a row. Sounds pretty terrible, right? You’d probably be irritable, frustrated, or even sad, agreed?

But, sleep isn’t only about the quantity, it’s also about quality. Even if you can sleep eight hours a day, but you wake up every two hours, you’ll wake up in the morning feeling exhausted. Is this you?

This is because your body’s internal 24-hour clock runs in the background and regulates your sleep-wake cycle, hormones, and even cell division.

But, if your sleep-wake cycle is off, so is your circadian rhythm.

Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a 24-hour cycle and they can affect hormones, body temperature, and digestion, not to mention how you feel when you’re sleep deprived or experiencing jet lag.

5. Eat walnuts for breast wellness

Have you ever heard of the Doctrine of Signatures? You probably have without even realizing it. It’s a theory as old as ancient Greece and proposes that herbs and other substances can support the body part that they resemble. While there is some truth to this supposition, it’s important to understand that there are also some dangers. But when it comes to the health of your breasts, recent research has shown that walnuts can actually be beneficial for women with breast cancer. 18, 19

In fact, some research has shown that if people with breast cancer eat as little as two ounces of walnuts per day for just two weeks, the gene expression can be altered. 6. Go blissfully bra-less

They came up with some interesting evidence suggesting that there might be a correlation between wearing tight bras and breast cancer rates.  And it makes sense if you think about it. In fact, the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine suggests that wearing tight bras for long periods of time can actually restrict the movement of lymphatic fluid in your breasts which could compromise breast health21. So, while you probably don’t want to go bouncing into work braless, you might want to release the girls for a few hours every day. Better still, go for a walk braless or do other kinds of light exercise to help move the lymph through your breast tissue.

You may be a wellness queen with years of experience using Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Packs (and if you are, we’re grateful for your loyalty). Or maybe you’re testing the waters of your new wellness awakening and wondering, “How do I choose a Castor Oil Pack when there’s so many options?

Does this sound like you? If so, read on!

You’ve probably noticed that Amazon and other online retailers seem to have countless varieties of Castor Oil and Castor Oil Packs at varying prices. Each brand claims to be the best for one reason or another, and the number of choices available is dazzling!

If you’re like most people, you’re understandably cost-conscious and simply trying to practice solid self-care without breaking the bank. Makes perfect sense, agreed?

Some of the advertising promises the “perfect” product at a “perfect” price, but here’s where caution is needed. Why? Let’s take a closer look.

Does the “perfect” less mess Castor Oil Pack exist?

Nothing is ever really perfect, is it? I mean, something might seem perfect, but if we’re honest, we begin to see how balance always prevails. Everything has imperfections. Dark always balances light, and so on. But without waxing philosophical, let’s just say that anyone who promises pure perfection is most likely leading you down the garden path.

On the other hand, admitting your weaknesses can help you improve, and that’s exactly what we pride ourselves on here at Queen of the Thrones®.

You might have noticed that we like to be transparent in our advertising. We tell our customers where and how we would like to improve our Castor Oil Packs, and we enjoy being honest by telling you up-front how our packs might not be perfect. They are better than they were, and they’re a lot better than DIY packs, but there is always room for improvement! Agreed?

How we want to improve our packs

If you’re familiar with Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Packs, then you also know that we’re proud of the less-mess design. But we’re careful to make sure everyone understands that the packs could leak, and that’s why we choose to say ‘less-mess’ and not ‘mess-free’. Honesty really is the best policy. 

The material that makes these packs less-mess is polypropylene that is heat-bonded to a layer of organic cotton flannel. But here’s the thing, while heat bonding is a cleaner alternative to chemical-bonding, and while polypropylene is considered one of the healthiest plastics (it’s what food containers like yogurt cups are made from), it’s still a type of plastic.

We would love to find a way to create an organic, plastic-free outer layer to keep the packs convenient and less messy, but for the moment, the safest and cleanest option is polypropylene. Sure, it ain’t perfect, but it’s the best design we’ve created so far. 

And who knows, we might be on the brink of a whole new design, but in the meantime, we like to be honest with our customers so they know exactly what they’re buying.

We’d also like to find a way to improve on our nylon straps. 

In the beginning, the straps were made of organic cotton, but we received tons of feedback that the cotton straps weren’t stretchy enough and would dig into the skin uncomfortably. Ouch! So we decided to redesign the straps using nylon. 

With these new soft, stretchy straps, the packs are comfortable enough to sleep in, but we’d prefer that they were made of a more natural material. Again, it ain’t perfect, but it’s the best compromise we could make. Still, we are always innovating and improving, so let’s hope that we’ll find that ideal solution sometime in the near future.

So, what’s the problem with imitation Castor Oil Packs?

With the use of Castor Oil and Castor Oil Packs gaining in popularity, there are, unfortunately, some imitation Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Packs on the market.

This is why we want to educate and empower you on how to spot phonies from the real deal.

Imitation brands made with cheap, synthetic, and chemically treated fabrics are often blended with what sounds like healthy fabrics. The imitation Castor Oil Packs may even have a label that says it’s organic, when it’s not. This is known as greenwashing.

Unfortunately, we can all be fooled into purchasing a less-than-premium product if we don’t know what to look for. See the screenshot below? This was taken from amazon.com of another Castor Oil Pack company that imitates the Queen of the Thrones® design.

As you can see, their image is almost an exact copy of Queen of the Thrones®, but their pack is manufactured with very different fabrics. Plus, the pack is placed on the wrong side of the body.

5 ways to spot a FAKE or IMITATION Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Pack or Castor Oil product

1. Synthetic materials

Many imitation packs are made with synthetic fabrics and materials that contain chemicals.

Beware of “organic bamboo” and other materials like cotton velour that are most often blended with plastic fibers or highly processed with chemicals.

Some may even have regulatory symbols stating that they are “healthy”. But the definition of healthy may be very different for manufacturers compared to natural wellness practitioners.

2. The words eco-friendly”, “green”, and “natural” – do not always mean health-friendly.

Yes, we want to help the environment and be eco-friendly, but not everything that is good for the environment is good for you.

This is a great example of the marketing tactic mentioned earlier called ”greenwashing”.

3. Castor Oil bottled in plastic and not amber glass 

Castor Oil is known as the best carrier oil, but when it’s bottled in plastic, it can leach contaminants from the plastic bottle. This is why we choose to bottle our Castor Oil in amber glass. The amber color protects the oil from light and the glass prevents leaching plastic-chemicals. Basically, if it’s not packaged in glass, it’s not the best quality.

4. Check the Castor Oil label for “hexane-free” and “100% pure”

Castor Oil can be extracted 2 ways: 

  1. Mechanical extraction (pressing)
  2. Solvent extraction (typically with hexane)

With mechanical pressing, the nutrients are maintained instead of being separated from the bean with chemicals (like hexane). Look for bottles that say “hexane-free” and either “cold-pressed” or “expeller pressed”

5. Prices that are too good to be true.

Everyone understands that “you get what you pay for” with quality products, right? If the price is lower than the brands that you know and trust, there’s a reason for it.

It isn’t a good time, sitting, waiting, wishing for something to manifest. In fact, it is totally painful. Yes, I’m talking about constipation. It affects millions around the world and is the most pressing health condition that exists today. Why then, are there not better ways to solve this ever-pressing problem? (pun intended)

Many people think that constipation simply has to do with food. Of course, food is a huge factor. Not eating enough fiber or drinking enough water can contribute to constipation. And if we eat foods that we are sensitive to, the body often responds with bloating and constipation. But there are a number of other factors that contribute to this agonizing issue which we will explore in this article.

How the body poops

The gut operates under a principle of pressure and lubrication. Without these, you cannot poo! This is why consuming a substantial amount of fiber helps you go to the bathroom. The fiber simply creates the pressure needed to push stools along your digestive tract and allows for the lower sphincter to relax so you can go poo. Fluids also help create pressure and have the double purpose of lubricating the digestive tract. Another key source of lubrication for the gut is the consumption of healthy fats.

The Psychology of Constipation

Without proper pressure and lubrication, there is a high chance of constipation. However, it is not this simple. Constipation is not only about food, it is mediated by a variety of other mechanisms

Hormonal Constipation

Hormones are another influencer of constipation. Thyroid issues can cause the metabolism to move at an incredibly slow rate, processing food and nourishment very slowly, and expelling it in the same manner1.

Estrogen dominance, which is an epidemic these days, also causes constipation2. High progesterone is required to have healthy bowel movements. When there is no stress, progesterone levels are higher, allowing the lower sphincter to work properly.

Nervous System Constipation

Stress is the other highly notable factor in constipation3. If you’re stressed, not only are you low in progesterone, but also in the minerals that help with relaxation and laxation such as magnesium and vitamin C.

Lifestyle Constipation

Your lifestyle can also contribute to constipation4. Movement of the body is required for movement of the bowels! Makes total sense, right? In order for the smooth muscle of the bowel to contract properly, regular exercise and movement is required5.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the picture of constipation is correlated to being unable to let things go. You may have a tendency of holding onto things and not working through them. If you hoard, on either a physical or emotional level, you likely have issues with constipation. The body tends to freeze and slow down its activity to protect you.
