Why “Functional Testing” is Necessary For Castor Oil

Just as your health isn’t determined by one single blood marker, testing Castor Oil works the same way. For example, it’s frustrating when TSH is tested alone, when you know you need your full thyroid panel tested to get the full picture, agreed?

Similarly, pure Castor Oil isn’t defined by one value. When we test each batch of our Castor Oil, we measure a range of factors to provide a complete understanding of its quality.

We test a multitude of markers that measure everything from rancidity and toxicity to nutritional deficiencies– a form of “functional testing” inspired by our founder, Dr. Marisol Teijeiro’s N.D. (inac) patient experience in clinical practice.

This form of functional testing is unique to Queen of the Thrones®, and what makes up the quality of your Castor Oil is determined by a much bigger picture.

Here are some of the key indicators we test for:

• Acid Value: This reflects the rancidity level of the oil. High acid values indicate an oil that is older and of lower quality that has been damaged/oxidized by light, heat, or prolonged storage, while a low acid value signals a fresher, high-quality oil.
• Iodine Value: This measures the degree of unsaturation in the oil. Oils with higher unsaturation levels are more prone to rancidity/oxidation, which can lead to a decline in quality.
• Peroxide Value: Freshness is key! The peroxide value tells us how fresh the oil is—lower peroxide values indicate freshness, while higher levels mean the oil is more likely to be rancid.
• Ricinoleic Acid: The magic fatty acid makes up 85-92% of Castor Oil. The higher the ricinoleic acid percentage, the better the oil’s benefits—but it must always fall within this optimal range.
• Solvents: It’s common practice in oil production and extraction to use solvents, such as hexane, in the oil processing. This is why testing is done to ensure no hidden solvents in our Castor Oil compromise its purity.
• Saponification and Ester Values: These tests help identify any potential adulteration or alteration of the oil.
• Fatty Acid Profile: Ensuring the oil matches the unique profile of Castor Oil,  so that your oil maintains its integrity and isn't “watered down” or of lesser value like many counterfeit options.
• Heavy Metals and More: In nature, nothing is 100% clean as everything is exposed to heavy metals and other toxins found in our environment, like cadmium, mercury, solvents, and lead. That’s why we test each batch, ensuring that the overall profile remains uncompromised even if one marker is slightly off.
